Welcome to the tour for Compendium by Alia Luria! This is a sci-fantasy novel that is adult but clean and appropriate for young adult readers.
Compendium by Alia Luria
On the heavily forested planet of Lumin, the Network has slept, dormant, for over six hundred cycles. Only a select few remember that it resides beneath the crust of the planet, waiting, and for them, the battle for Lumin’s future has raged in the shadows.
When Mia Jayne’s path crosses with an ancient volume in the Archives of the Order of Vis Firmitas, this ancient battle moves from the shadows into the light. Compendium opens up a world of knowledge, and, for the first time since arriving at the Order, Mia has the key to reclaim the freedom she has lost. To do so, she must choose between her conscience and her heart. Conceived against an ailing world of fantastical beauty where long-lost technology tips the balance between extinction and survival, Mia must remember that there is always a choice, and that makes all the difference.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Alia Luria resides in Orlando, Florida with her partner and two Pembroke Welsh Corgis. When she is not busy writing her epic sci-fiction/fantasy series, she is very, very busy practicing law as a corporate mergers and acquisitions and data privacy attorney. Apart from writing and reading voraciously, she really enjoys travel and photography and mixing the two. She also spends an inordinate amount of time enjoying fountain pens.
Hi! My name is Alia Luria, and I’m the author of the new novel Compendium. I’m very happy to be doing this guest post for A Flurry of Ponderings. For this post, I want to write a little bit about two of my favorite characters and how they interact. Some of the most fun I had writing Compendium was writing scenes where Compendium, the character, and Mia interact. Mia tends to be very emotional, even if she’s not always open about it with others. Compendium is an excellent counterpoint. As an artificial intelligence, it is always calm, collected and emotionless. That clash of emotion versus an utter lack of emotion often creates amusing exchanges. Below is an excerpt that happens just after Mia discovers some new features of Compendium. I will meet you on the other side to discuss!
“The wireless interface also has been activated,” said the voice. It was so calm and neutral that it was hard to discern a gender. Mia always had imagined that residing inside Compendium was a tiny, snarky old man.
“Voice modulation complete,” said the calm voice of an old man in her ear.
“You can read my mind?” she shouted. “Could you do that all along?”
“I can access your thought patterns now that you have completed Beta Level activation. I could not always do so.”
“Mind asking permission first?” she said out loud, although clearly that wasn’t necessary.
“Why?” asked Compendium in her ear. “That would be most inefficient. Additionally now you don’t have to walk around sounding mad, and you’re free to utilize me while using both hands for other tasks.”
Mia realized she was pacing around while the book was still on the mattress. How far away can I be and still establish communication?
“I am capable of unlimited range,” said the old man in her head.
All right, all right. Change your voice back, please.
“As you wish,” said Compendium in its original neutral voice. The tone was emotionless yet comfortingly calm.
Really, though, you do seem snarkier in writing.
“I apologize,” said the voice in her ear.
It’s these types of exchanges that really made me love writing Compendium as a character. The sincere evenness of the machine paired with the volatile human. Mia creates a personality from Compendium’s words, and it is her reactions to its words that create the banter between the two. This is an incredibly important relationship in the store, and I feel like I did a good job creating life in an inanimate object and making that life a reflection of the needs of Mia. There are many more scenes that I wish I could excerpt here, but I want there to be something left for the readers! I hope you will buy a copy of Compendium or download it with Kindle Unlimited and get to read the whole story of Mia and Compendium’s relationship, and if you do, I hope you will enjoy reading about Mia and Compendium as much as I enjoyed writing it!
Thank you for checking out my guest post, and thank you to A Flurry of Ponderings for hosting me!••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
